In this video we visit Corio, a small station situated on the north side of Geelong. Here we see various V/Line Vlocity trains stopping at the station and passing through the station at speed (up to 160km/h). Corio station opened in September 1890 as Cowie's Creek, being renamed Cowie in May 1904 and then Corio in December 1913. It used to be a fairly busy station on the line; attracting decent patronage from the Geelong Grammar School and the adjacent Shell oil refinery, but today it's the least used station in the Geelong area. The current station was built in 1981 when the line between Lara and Corio was duplicated. Unfortunately though I consider Corio to be one of my least favourite stations in Victoria. Don't get me wrong; it's a great place for trainspotting as it's relatively quiet, has great views of the rail corridor and a fantastic trackside spot just north of the station. However the station itself is a dogs breakfast; it lacks facilities and has a rather run-down appearance. It also smells weird thanks to the adjacent refinery, and is poorly located; situated away from residential areas and the station entrance on the wrong side of the station. It can feel unsafe too; this station is literally the place where your car would get nicked if you left it there.
