Ghana To Start Piloting New Digital Currency To Start In September - The Bank of Ghana is preparing to launch the first digital currency, known as the ‘e-cedi,' by September of this year. It is also known as the Central Bank Digital Currency and is expected to operate in a sandbox before being introduced to the public as legal tender for financial transactions. According to Dr. Ernest Addison, the governor of the country's central bank, the new proposed digital currency will be implemented after three pilot stages confirm that it is a good thing to introduce into the local economy. At a news conference in Accra, Dr. Addison said, “The Bank of Ghana was one of the first African Central Banks to declare that we were working on a digital currency, looking at the concept of an e-cedi.” With this move, the e-cedi becomes Africa's first digital currency.
