SPEAKER: Nadiah Bamadhaj MODERATOR: Khat Mirzan Watch Nadiah describe her process for creating her autobiographical work “Quiet Rooms” (2009). She recalls a time when she moved into a suburban village in Yogyakarta and faced the overwhelming societal pressures and reproductive expectations on the female body. The charcoal on paper collage work is featured in “The Body Politic and the Body,” which was ILHAM’s most recent exhibition that was held in collaboration with the Singapore Art Museum. — Nadiah Bamadhaj (b. 1968, Selangor, Malaysia) was trained as a sculptor at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, and today works in a range of media, including drawing, video and digital images. She has also worked in non-governmental organizations for HIV/ AIDS prevention and human rights advocacy. In 2002, she was awarded the Nippon Foundation’s Asian Public Intellectuals Fellowship, and spend her fellowship period in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Her artwork continues to focus on the social intricacies of Yogykarata’s society, using myth, architecture, and dwelling to articulate her observations.
