Over 1700 metres above sea level and surrounded by the North Anatolian and Palandoken mountains, lies the Turkish city of Erzurum. Erzurum's rich and diverse history can be traced back as far as 4000 BC. The turbulent and often bloody past is reflected in one of the local sports, Jereed, meaning javelin, an ancient game played on horseback. Horses have always played a significant role in this part of the world and Jereed has long been one of the most important sporting and ceremonial games of the local people.
