West Bengal violence: Widespread violence marred the polling process in West Bengal Panchayat elections today. At least seven people, three from the ruling Trinamool Congress and one from the BJP, were allegedly killed in clashes during voting. Polling booths were vandalised, and ballot papers were set on fire in Cooch Behar. West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose, who visited North 24 Parganas on the morning of July 8, said, "Elections must be through ballots, not bullets." Meanwhile, West Bengal's Leader of Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, equated the ongoing election in the state with death. Both TMC and BJP are to blame id="hidden5" class="buttons"> that local elections have been politicised to this extent! Of course the biggest blame lies at the door of the Left parties who started this unwholesome trend. Local elections should be individual based, why so much of party involvement?. If this scale of fight goes on between parties, one can imagine how much corruption exists in local governance. Most unfortunate sufferers will be villagers who may not have any axe to grind in this party politics. Their welfare is the last thing on anybody's mind. Another disturbing thing was that the bengal police completely failed to control the situation. Why we're so many firearms, bombs available with these goons.? Why could the place not be sanitised? I couldn't see the central forces either on TV visuals. Goons were freely vandalising booths, boxes, election materials. What a state we are living in!
