Life of Elephants [National Geographic Documentary HD 2017]
Africa. Sprawled across this continent are vast savannahs, seemingly endless deserts, and impenetrable rain forests. Each region is dotted with a unique array of wild animals, from elusive leopards to the delicate, gazelle-like bongo.
An adult male savannah elephant — the largest land mammal in the world — weighs about 12,000 pounds and stands roughly 10 feet tall at the shoulder. The smaller forest elephant weighs 10,000 pounds at most. And unlike savannah elephants’ curved tusks, forest dwellers’ are small and straight, designed for negotiating routes through dense foliage. Both elephants do possess the same tough hide (the Latin name for elephant is “pachyderm,” or “thick-skinned”). But while their skin may be durable, elephants still need protection from insects and the hot African sun. Wallowing in a mud bath cools down an elephant as well as provides an extra layer of cover.

@OliverTerp20013 years agoElephants are one nature’s most amazing creatures on earth cause they have survived nearly 50 million years since they earliest ancestors evolved until today my favorite part of the elephant are they family connections in a herd they are lead by an older wiser more intelligent and experienced female she is the matriarch along her sisters cousins nieces daughters granddaughters and after the matriarch dies the herd gather around her to say they last goodbye to they leader and the matriarch,s sister will be the new matriarch just like her sister did she will see many births like her sister did when she gave birth to her calves ...13

@crazyeyedme46854 years agoElephants are by far my absolute favorite species. Gorillas are my 2nd, tigers 3rd. It figures that their all endangered from humans. It's hard not to hate the majority of the human race. Look at the devastation and destruction we've caused or purposely created. We're killing the beauty of the world every single day. We're becoming more and more disconnected from what is true and real. I really freaking hope to god that humanity isn't the Pinnacle of intelligent life. If we are, then the universe itself is truly sadistic. At our numbers of population though, we're already so far out of control that only an act of God can save life. We already have all the knowledge we need to both have our cake and eat it too, yet we continue to throw away morals and spirit to feed our insatiable appetites. ...21

They're not a sub-species tho, just adapted. - [Elephants digest only 40%-60% of the food they eat.] - [While rhino's can grow back their horns, elephant's tusks do not re-generate.] - elephants can communicate with each other by sensing vibrations through their feet. - elephants can regrow their molars 6 times. ...1
